Google Business Profile: the number one way to scale local traffic

What's the single best way to scale local traffic, online and off? Your Google Business Profile. It's one of the most underused, low-cost and genuinely easy ways to get people in your area to visit your site or buy from your store.

Why the profile is so powerful

When you search for something like "flower delivery Auckland", you get a couple of ads at the top, then a large box showing a map and nearby businesses with their reviews. That's where your Business Profile appears. Tap it and it expands into a rich panel with your photos, your name, your details, your review count and how people rate you. It's a brilliant piece of marketing real estate because it shows exactly what's happening in your local area.

Reviews do the persuading

Say you're hunting for a cafe nearby. You've got a long list and plenty of reviews to compare. Which one wins? Usually the one with more reviews and the higher rating. Faced with a five-star cafe with 47 reviews and a three-star cafe with a hundred, most people go for the 47 five-star reviews every time.

How to optimise it

Optimising your profile isn't hard at all, and the basics take about half an hour to learn.

Start with your title so it's a clean match for what you do and where you do it. That doesn't mean stuffing it with keywords. It means your name, your location and your service, kept simple. Then set the right category so it accurately reflects what you actually offer.

Once that's sorted, you'll show up far more often in local search and see a lot more people finding your business. There are also easy ways to keep a steady flow of reviews coming in, which strengthens the whole thing over time.

If you do just one thing this week, spend half an hour on this. The results in local traffic tend to show up quickly.
